Scones, stories and self-care: Moray’s afternoon of mental health awareness

Three hours. Countless conversations. One very full plate of scones.
Our Mental Health Awareness Workshop with Green Ribbons at Threaplands Garden Centre wasn’t just a session. It was a table full of laughter, listening and genuine care.
Dozens of people from across Moray came together to talk about what often goes unsaid: depression, suicide awareness, and self-care. We practised active listening (because being present > being perfect) and swapped the usual small talk for real talk, the kind that reminds you how much we all have in common.
The setting helped. Sunshine through the glasshouse, coffee cups clinking, and the smell of fresh scones that vanished almost as fast as the meringues. Somehow, those small comforts make big conversations easier.
“It’s amazing how quickly strangers turn into supporters when you make space to listen,” said Jean “You don’t need the perfect words - just presence.”
This gentle afternoon fell during Suicide Prevention Week, but the message matters every week: self-care isn’t selfish. Looking after ourselves helps us look after everyone else a little better.
Huge thanks to everyone who joined us and to Ben, Olivia and the Threaplands team for the beautiful venue, the warm welcome and the scones that probably deserve their own standing ovation.
If you missed it, we’ll be running more sessions soon. Because every chat, every cup of tea, every shared story helps Moray look after its own.
